Assistance & Access Around Kernow

Because of the steepness of the ground surrounding the original buildings some areas are difficult to reach in a wheelchair or independently by those with limited mobility. Kernow staff are available, and will guide or assist anyone in need of help.

Disabled Access

Wheelchair access is restricted to some areas immediately surrounding the original buildings. There are also some steps between the car ports and apartments without handrails that some people may find difficult.

Parking

There is a relatively flat car parking area large enough for 10 cars immediately by Reception.  If you do require assistance from your vehicle, please do let us know in advance by calling the office on 0447 557 200 and we will happily assist you.

Reception

There are a few steps up to the main door of Reception, but the car park has a gentle slope up to the side door which has double doors which are easily opened.

Ground Floor Public Rooms

The ground floor is all on one level, and has no steps. All the ground floor public rooms have double doors which can easily be opened, however there are no wheelchair-accessibly washrooms available in the main building.

Porkellis Wing

As this is an existing building we were permitted to delay the installation of wheelchair-accessible accommodation until we undertook our new-build accommodation, so we look forward to having these available in the not too distant future.

The Annex

Again, as this was an original building, and although there is a ramp to the Terrace Rooms, there are also a few steps in various places.  Access to the conference area is possible with prior notification.

Swimming Pool

Access to the swimming pool is via a gate 800cm wide, and over a grassy area so is not suitable for wheelchair access.

Service Dogs

Service dogs are welcome to show you around Kernow, however, we just ask that they be kept on a lead.

Kernow is 130km South West from Townsville

By Car – Follow the A6 Flinders Highway from Townsville.

By Train – It is possible to take a train which originates at Townsville or Mt Isa, but it is slow and has a very limited timetable.  If you like trains it is an experience however, and we can of course arrange to collect you and drop you off at the station which is very close by.

By Air – Our nearest passenger airport is Townsville, but Charters Towers does have a very good airport for small aircraft.

Taxi – Taxis are available on the usual number (131 008).
